Whether exploring hidden worlds or encouraging quiet bravery, Debra’s stories celebrate the magic in every child’s perspective. She lives in Mississippi, where she brings big dreams to life one page at a time.

Lily Ortiz
ILLUSTRATOR
Lily Ortiz is an illustrator with a wild imagination and a collection of sketchbooks that mysteriously end up in the most curious places. She loves to make stories pop with color, creativity, and just the right amount of glitter (metaphorically… unless you catch her on a particularly sparkly day). When she's not drawing, she's probably tucked away in a library, a paintbrush stuck in her hair, her cats around to "supervise" her work… or occasionally take a bite out of it for quality control.

This Month's Featured Quilter
I first learned how to sew from my mother when I was around twelve years old, beginning with a simple apron I made for myself. Over the years, my sewing journey expanded into creating pieces for weddings, proms, and pageants for many individuals.
Although sewing had always been a part of my life, I did not truly discover my love for quilting until my early twenties, when I made a small quilt for my son. My first large quilt was a Log Cabin pattern from a McCall’s quilting magazine. While the colors of that quilt have faded over time, it is still well-loved and usable today — a reminder of where my quilting journey truly began.
Throughout the years, I have explored many quilting techniques, including English Paper Piecing (EPP) and appliqué, both of which involve a great deal of handwork and patience. These days, however, my favorite projects are often the fast and easy ones that still bring comfort and joy to others.
In addition to piecing quilts, I also provide longarm quilting services using my computerized Gammill quilting machine. Teaching has also become a meaningful part of my quilting journey, and I have enjoyed sharing both sewing and quilting skills with others over the years — including teaching Debra much of what she knows today.
Quilting involves far more math than most people realize, which led to one of our favorite ongoing jokes: “Debra’s Quilt Math.” Somehow, her calculations never quite add up correctly… and it seems to only add up to extra fabric for everyone’s fabric stash.
